The office culture of the early 80s and 90s was entirely different to what we have today. The competitive model fostered the propensity to hoard good ideas in order to claim credit and promotions. It lends itself to a stress-fuelled environment where office politics and “political manoeuvring” were important to get to the top. It was about the individual as opposed to the company.

When people are purpose driven, they do not act out of fear of rebuke or to outdo the next guy. They are motivated by their goals which, in turn, are the goals of the company. And they have fun while doing it.
When they succeed, the exhaustion soon gives way to shared celebration.
