Chris O’Neil, one of the founder of Drum Café Canada, is a passionate and visionary leader in the world of percussion and team building. Chris’s journey with Drum Cafe began with his own love for percussion. Having studied and performed percussion extensively, he recognized the power of drumming as a universal language that transcends cultural and linguistic barriers. Percussion Studies at Cambrian College:
Chris began his percussion studies at Cambrian College in Sudbury, Ontario. During this time, he held the position of Principal Percussion in the Sudbury Symphony Orchestra for two years.

Collaboration with “Earthdancers”:
While in Sudbury, Chris started accompanying modern dance performances for a group called “Earthdancers.” This experience sparked his interest in composing music for percussion in collaboration with dancers from Toronto Dance Theatre.

Bachelor of Music in Performance Percussion at UBC:
Chris moved to Vancouver to pursue his Bachelor of Music in Performance Percussion at the University of British Columbia. He had the opportunity to study under Salvador Ferreras, a renowned percussionist.

Performances with Symphony Orchestras:
While in Vancouver, Chris played with various symphony orchestras, including the Okanagan Symphony, the Burnaby Symphony, and the Vancouver Island Symphony. These experiences allowed him to showcase his skills as a percussionist within the classical music realm.

Involvement in Vancouver’s African Drum Community:
Chris became an integral part of Vancouver’s African drum community. He performed with Fana Soro’s “Masabo Culture Company” and played the djembe solo in Fana’s African dance classes. This involvement allowed him to immerse himself in African drumming traditions.

Performance at the World Rhythm Festival:
Chris was invited to play the djembe at the World Rhythm Festival in Seattle. He performed with Pepe Danza and the Rhythm Fools, showcasing his expertise in percussion.

Percussionist for Pepe Danza’s Latin Jazz Band:
Chris also played percussion for Pepe Danza’s Latin Jazz Band, known as El Sur. This provided him with an opportunity to explore Latin rhythms and contribute to the vibrant music scene in Vancouver.

Head of the Drum Cafe in Toronto:
Currently, Chris is the head of the Drum Cafe in Toronto. This role likely involves leading and organizing drumming workshops, events, and performances, creating an engaging and interactive experience for participants.
