Why it works
The world has become a beautiful melting pot of various beliefs and cultures. Without a doubt, there has never been a time when understanding the value of cooperation, unity, tolerance and respect has been more important.
The difficulty lies in crossing the border inherent to each of our understanding of the world to gain a real grasp on the concept that we are all human, all unique, but all the same. That we should not let our preconceived notions of self and others dictate our interactions, but instead always be in search of the common ground – that space that allows us to meet and accept one another for who we are – judgment set aside in favor of acceptance.
A fair amount of bullying, lack of tolerance, and low self-esteem stems from a place of being unsure of one’s place in the world and an inability to understand others. By creating an experience that leads to greater understanding, barriers are closed and old though patterns are set aside.
They key is music. It’s something that we all understand at a basic level. Rhythm, in particular, forms a fundamental part of our lives, it’s something that we are all familiar with, no matter who we are. Drumming gives us a chance to express our own individual rhythm. In any Drum Cafe rhythm event, like-minded individuals come together and merge their rhythmical experience into one musical expression or “group vision”.
By joining forces to create something together, without pressure and in a fun way, everyone learns to value themselves and those surrounding them at an equal level.
Drum Cafe is an interactive event – each individual is not a spectator, but a performer who is involved at the same level as his/her colleague, enforcing a cooperative, non-competitive relationship amongst the group.
